So, Chrismas is right around the corner and this will be our first time as a family celebrating it in a country where it is not a holiday. They do tend to cater to the people who do celebrate it but it is nowhere near as prevalent as it is in the states. Here we want to tell people about why we celebrate this holiday. But of course a lot of misconceptions have been formed over the years. There are also things that we can mention in America during this time that we can't here. If we mention Israel or Jerusalem that tends to upset people here. Also in the manger scene the baby Jesus being there is inappropriate because the Quran says that there should be no images of the prophets anywhere because of the potential of idolatry. Anyways, just some thoughts on the changes we are facing. Also, the governor of the town is actually inviting all those celebrate Christmas to come help decorate a Christmas tree that they want to put up. So that has been a topic of discussion for us here. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Wow, some unique challenges. I never thought about the potential idolatry for the nativity scene. Something interesting has been circulating on the internet recently. It's a nativity set that uses Coke cans to represent those at the stable. You know, the ones that have names on them now. They had "Angel," "Jose," "Maria" and "Jose" cans. The "Jesus" can was laying on its side inside an open box with "Jose" and "Maria" standing up next to it with an "Angel" can on top of the box. It was fun! Obviously you couldn't use coke cans, but what if you used blocks or such to spell out the key individuals? At least they wouldn't be images! That might be a creative way to display a nativity.
