Just what did Elkanah give or not give to Hannah as her offering?

Evidently a double portion of beef, lamb or goat meat as part of a peace offering (Lev. 3:1, 6, 12)

How much?? The Hebrew is rather challenging. And "why" how much? See the RSV for example translations. Someone brought that to my attention.

Ah, your question was more subtle than I anticipated. I'll look at the Hebrew and holler back.

I don't like the RSV translation of 1:5. I think it overlooks אַפָּ֑יִם Compare this verse to 1 Samuel 23:3 where the singular form וְאַף is used in much the same way and translated idiomatically, "how much more." See BDB, archive.org/stream/hebrewenglishlex00browuoft#page/65/mode/1up I think אַפָּ֑יִם as a dual here in 1:5 intends to imply a doubling since it reads "faces" or particularly "two faces" meaning an identical reproduction. I'd read in 1:5 that he gave her "one portion, a double one" BECAUSE he loved her. - Daniel

Agreed.

On a more logical level, if the RSV is correct and Hannah got "only one portion," then did everyone else start with a double portion? That doesn't follow naturally. - Daniel
